The noni plant is a shrub from Southeast Asia and its popularity as an alternative treatment for a number of health conditions has spread throughout India and other countries. Today, it is commercially manufactured worldwide as noni juice and has claimed medical breakthroughs in the field of cancer prevention and treatment.

All parts of the noni plant are used for their curative effects, but the leaves of the noni have been used more than any other. Traditionally, Polynesians used the leaves in folk medicines. Today, aside from the noni fruit, large noni leaves are utilized in the production of noni tea.

Noni Leaves

Fresh or dried noni leaves can offer the same amount of nutritional benefits. In fact, the leaf part is the richest in nutrient among other parts of the noni plant. It contains phytochemicals, antioxidants, and bioflavonoids.  Several vitamins and minerals are found in the noni leaves like phosphorus, iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, vitamin K1, niacin and more. Plant sterols, protein, glycosides, and anthraquinones are also essential chemical substances in the noni leaf. In 2008, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) approved the use of dried or roasted noni leaves in the preparation of noni tea. Based on the study, there was no detrimental health impact whatsoever on the use of dried and roasted noni leaves.

Homemade Noni Tea

It’s easy to make tea from noni plant by using crushed noni leaves. For every 8 ounces of tepid water, add a teaspoon of crushed noni leaves. You can set it aside or steep overnight. Strain, drink cold or add lemon and drink as iced tea. Add a little honey or sweetener if you like.

If you are using boiled water, use the same amount of noni leaves and water as in above instruction and steep only for 5 minutes.

Noni Tea Health Benefits

Drinking tea made from noni regularly can help boost the immune system and reduce the risk of cancer because of its xeronine content. Digestion is facilitated because noni tea cleanses the intestinal system and gets rid of the body toxins; it acts as a body detoxifier. It possesses antibacterial and antimicrobial properties against any the digestion problems such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, intestinal worms and food poisoning.

Like other herbal teas, this tea helps lessen the debilitating effects of age-related disorders like hypertension. It also contains selenium that makes your skin healthy and youthful.

Noni Tea Side Effects

Not everyone can drink noni tea. It is not a miracle drink for people with existing health problems that are contraindications to noni components. Cancer patients that are diagnosed recently can benefit from taking noni tea, but not for those who have been seriously ill with cancer for a long time.

  • Noni tea may cause liver damage. The Health Library Natural & Alternative Health Center report that research indicates that noni may have liver-toxic ingredient that can develop into liver problems or aggravate liver damage.
  • If you are watching your calorie intake due to other disorders, care should be taken when drinking this type of tea.
  • Tea from noni plant has high potassium content, which can be harmful for people with kidney disorders. Potassium is vital in the regulation of body fluids, but large amounts of potassium may damage the kidneys.
  • Pregnant women are discouraged from drinking tea made from noni due to lack of evidence or research.
